Main Road Martlesham Update
Suffolk County Council has provided an update on the planned improvements on Main Road, Martlesham, between the A12 and Nunn Close.
- Construction starts: Monday 19 October 2026
- Duration: Approximately 20 weeks
Improvements:
- Carriageway and footpath resurfacing, drainage improvements, and a review/update of street lighting.
- A continuous shared-use route for pedestrians and cyclists along the south-east side of Main Road.
- Two new parallel crossings, near Blacktiles Lane and Nunn Close, giving priority to pedestrians and cyclists.
The scheme is designed to make local journeys safer and more accessible, particularly for people walking, cycling and wheeling, while improving connections between homes, schools, employment and community facilities.
The project forms part of the wider A12 MRN programme and contributes to longer-term walking and cycling connections between Martlesham, Ipswich and Woodbridge. It will also link with existing infrastructure in Kesgrave and planned improvements to the east of Ipswich.
During construction, temporary traffic management and traffic lights will be required, so some disruption to residents, businesses and road users should be expected. Notices will be put in advances of the works and there will be a letter drop to surrounding homes and businesses.
The improvements have been mainly funded by the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), with additional funding from theA12 Major Road Network (MRN) project and support from East Suffolk Council. The current improvements cover the section between the A12 and Nunn Close. A potential future phase between Nunn Close and Sandy Lane has also been identified, subject to funding.
Community and stakeholder engagement took place during summer 2025, with feedback helping to inform the development of the scheme.

Following the meeting of the Development, Environment and Transport Planning Committee on Wednesday 11th February, a Holding Objection was agreed and subsequently submitted on the 12th February 2026.

A12 Major Road Network (MRN) Improvement Scheme – Have Your Say
A planning application has now been submitted for the A12 Major Road Network (MRN) improvement scheme, which includes proposed changes affecting the A12 corridor through and around Martlesham. The scheme aims to improve traffic flow, safety, and facilities for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and public transport, while supporting future growth in the area.
Martlesham Parish Council encourages all residents to review the details of the application and submit their comments directly to the Local Planning Authority. This is an important opportunity for residents to express support, concerns, or suggestions before a decision is made.
